It finally caught up with her and her hand feels dead

It was bound to happen. The “super girl” had a tuff day. Alice has frankly been nothing short of amazing. She has rarely asked for pain meds, trys to participate with all her visitors, and smiles and asks people who visit how they are or how their doing. Today has been her first day to crash.

Yesterday they tried to do an MRI but she couldn’t lie down flat (imagine that!) and then she felt terrible cause she took their time and could do it. Today they offered sedation and/or pain meds for the MRI and she refused and made it through the MRI but was quite miserable most of the day. Nothing pleased her, no food sounded good and no matter what we tried, she just wasn’t going to be happy. It finally all caught up; the pain, the steroids (nasty drugs those steroids), the fatigue, and her left hand went numb. That kind of freaked her out. She’s now adjusting to not being able to use that hand much. She’s dropping things, unable to use it and generally frustrated by it. Seldon had predicted that the third day her symptoms would peak, then, hopefully regresses.
All and all she has had a frustrating and unhappy day. She’s been through so much it’s difficult to watch, but I tell you, that girl is nothing short of amazing. She complains so little and keeps up a great attitude.

Everyone except John and I left today and while all the support has been great, I also think she needed space to just be grumpy and tired and painful and not feel like she had to put on a good show. She has very high expectations of herself. And Alice is extremely stubborn, which overall works well and keeps her going, but today the defenses came down – which is good. It is hard as a parent to watch, but good for her to be able to be vulnerable.

So, she’s sleeping now, hopefully she’ll get a good night sleep and see what tomorrow brings.

Sweet dreams to all,
I’ll write again soon.
Thanks for all the kind responses and encouragement.
Love and peace,
Susan

Dear Heinz family,
It has been so quiet in the office this week - I miss you Susan! I just figured out how to send you a note. All of our prayers are with you. I am SO happy that Alice is recovering so well, with the expected ups and downs :) Please give her a big kiss from us. I wonder how her Mom and Dad are holding up? I love you all and can't wait to see you back home in Corvallis soon. Call if you need anything. Love AJ and family

This is Jenessa Byers' dad just wanting to let you know I am praying for you and my heart goes out to you and thank you for your input into our journey.
